Micro-arcsec Astrometry of the Milky Way and Beyond

چکیده
Recently we have been able to achieve parallaxes and proper motions with accuracies approaching microarcseconds using the VLBA. The apparent proper motion of Sgr A* has been measured with extremely high accuracy, strongly constraining Θ0/R0 and potentially offering a new dynamical definition of the Galactic plane. The intrinsic motion of Sgr A* perpendicular to the Galactic plane is extremely small (∼ 1 km s) and comparable to that expected for a supermassive black hole. When coupled with IR observations of stellar orbits, this provides overwhelming evidence for the existence of supermassive black holes. We have measured trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for about a dozen high-mass star forming regions (HMSFRs). Generally, kinematic distances exceed the true distances, suggesting that the IAU Galactic parameters, R0 and Θ0, may need modification. Values of the Solar Motion from our data agree with those obtained from Hipparcos data, but HMSFRs appear to be rotating slower than the Galaxy. Finally, the extraordinary astrometric capabilities of the VLBA have been used to measure extragalactic proper motions and to map masers in distant AGN accretion disks, which will yield direct estimates of H0.

Spectroscopy, Photometry and Micro-arcsec Astrometry of Binaries with the Gaia Space Mission and with the Rave Experiment
GAIA astrometric mission of ESA will be very efficient in discovering binary and multiple stars with any orbital period, from minutes to millions of years. Main parameters of the revised mission design are presented. Next we estimate the fraction of binary stars discovered by means of astrometry, photometry and on-board spectroscopy. Finally we summarize observations that confirm the ability to...
متن کاملGaia: Origin and Evolution of the Milky Way
GAIA is a short-listed candidate for the ESA Cornerstone mission C5, meeting the ESA Survey Committee requirement for an observatory mission, dedicated to astrometry, providing 10 micro-arcsecond accuracy at 15th magnitude. The GAIA mission concept follows the dramatic success of the ESA HIPPARCOS mission, utilising a continuously scanning spacecraft, accurately measuring 1-D coordinates along ...
متن کاملFar-red spectroscopy of peculiar stars and the GAIA mission
The coming GAIA Cornerstone mission by ESA will provide micro-arcsec astrometry, ∼10 bands photometry and far-red spectroscopy for a huge number of stars in the Galaxy (109). GAIA spectroscopy will cover the range 8480–8740 Å which includes the CaII triplet and the head of the Paschen series. In this paper we address the diagnostic potential of this wavelength range toward detection of peculiar...
متن کاملMaser Astrometry with VLBI and the SKA
We discuss the unique opportunities for maser astrometry with the inclusion of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) networks. The first phase of the SKA will enable observations of hydroxyl and methanol masers, positioning the latter to an accuracy of 5 microarcseconds, and the second phase may allow water maser observations. These observations will provi...
متن کاملAstrometry with digital sky surveys: from SDSS to LSST
Major advances in our understanding of the Universe have historically come from dramatic improvements in our ability to accurately measure astronomical quantities. The astrometric observations obtained by modern digital sky surveys are enabling unprecedentedly massive and robust studies of the kinematics of the Milky Way. For example, the astrometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS...
